FAQ for employees
Starting work in the Netherlands
What do I need to be able to work in the Netherlands if I’m coming from abroad?
To work in the Netherlands, you need a valid identity document or passport. You will also need a BSN (Citizen Service Number) to receive your salary. Europrofessionals helps new employees with the practical steps involved in starting work, such as applying for a BSN at the local council.
What documents do I need to work in the Netherlands?
You will usually need:
- A valid passport or identity card
- A BSN number
- A bank account
- A driving licence, if applicable
- Any certificates required for specific roles
We will always let you know in advance which documents are required for your role.
Can I work in the Netherlands without a BSN?
No. BSN stands for Burgerservicenummer (Citizen Service Number). You need this personal number to work in the Netherlands, pay tax and receive your salary. If you do not yet have a BSN, we will help you make an appointment with the local council.
How soon can I start working in the Netherlands?
That depends on your availability, your documents and the vacancies currently available. In many cases, a placement can be arranged within a few days once all the necessary documents have been provided.
Do I need work experience to work through a temporary employment agency?
Not always. For many roles, motivation, commitment and reliability are more important than experience. However, relevant work experience may be required for specialist roles.
What is DigiD?
DigiD is a digital identity that allows you to carry out administrative tasks online with Dutch government agencies, such as tax matters and health insurance.
